Neill Blomkamp Kicks Off Crowdfunding Campaign for Horror/Sci-fi Feature ‘Firebase’

004.jpg

"Just launched today, the Firebase crowdfunding campaign is a bit different than the ones you’ll find on services like Kickstarter and Indiegogo. For his campaign, Blomkamp has done away with physical perks, ensuring that every dollar is actually going to show up on screen; however much money the fund raises, that’s how much Firebase will be made for."

The One Weird Nicolas Cage Movie That Nicolas Cage Definitely Wants To Make A Sequel For

"I think in terms of sequels, I think Mom and Dad has potential for a sequel. I think so, yeah. I mean, I would be curious to see the direction it could go in, but I think it was probably the most dysfunctional family ever put on celluloid, and with the grandparents coming in."

'A Quiet Place' Scores China Release Date

007.jpg

"The Chinese opening is something of a coup for Paramount and Platinum Dunes, given how rare horror releases are in the Middle Kingdom. The country has no movie ratings system, so all titles approved for release must be deemed suitable for viewers of all ages."

Horror at the box office:

014.jpg

As reported last week, I stated that 'Truth or Dare' would end up faring poorly in comparison to The Rock's new film 'Rampage'. Surprisingly, 'Truth' had a decent weekend coming in third with $19 million while 'Rampage' took the top spot by a hair over 'A Quiet Place' which earned $34.5 million and $32.6 million respectively.

With the upcoming release of the next 'Avengers' flick, I doubt we will be seeing much mainstream horror topping the charts for the next little while, but we remain hopeful!

HORROR SHOP OF THE WEEK: BURIAL GROUNDS COFFEE CO

LOGO_FOR_SHOPIFY_540x.png

During Women in Horror Month this February, I had the honor of profiling women-owned and operated shops with a focus on handmade items for fans of the creepy and macabre. For this feature, I interviewed the incredible owner of Burial Grounds Coffee Co (read the interview with Angie here). Before the article, I was already a huge fan of the shop. But then I quickly became an even bigger fan of the shop owner.

019.jpg

The first thing you should know is that her coffee is so sinfully good that it will make you easily want to kick your Starbucks habit. The shop’s custom, artisan roasted, small batch coffee blends are inspired by characters and villains from a variety of horror and sci-fi films and popular fandoms. With so many unique flavor combinations, the hardest part is choosing what to buy. I’ve tried several different flavors and never once been disappointed.

Made by a die-hard horror fan with a sincere passion for what she does and an obvious love for the community that supports her, there’s no place I’d recommend more for genre fans who kill for a great cup of coffee.

With all that said, there’s an even bigger reason why I was so eager to feature this shop in this week’s Community Spotlight. Shop owner Angie also runs Instagram’s first ever horror themed auction house at @goregeousodditiesauction. She and several other of my favorite shops sell a variety of must have merch each month that includes coffee and tea, clothing, art, and bath and beauty products — all handmade.

020.jpg

I recently had the pleasure to partner with Burial Grounds Coffee Co and Gorgeous Oddities Auction to put on a Charity Auction benefiting the incredible anti-bullying organization, Don’t Be a Monster. Angie was beyond incredible, selfishly giving so much of her time and energy to make the auction a success. Not only did she tirelessly work behind the scenes to set up and run the auction, but she also donated several of her most popular coffee blends — and even helped support the auction by personally purchasing many of the great items available.

When a small business does so much to generously give back and support others as need, as well as to rabidly support other shop owners and makers, they more than deserve your hard earned money. When they also happen to consistently deliver a great product and exceptional service, there’s absolutely no reason not to support them.

Visit Burial Grounds Coffee Co at https://burialgrounds.coffee/.

Be sure to also follow them on Instagram @burialgroundscoffeeco. Angie’s product photography is amazing, and it’s a visual treat as well as a great way to stay on top of restocks, new releases and specials.
