Buffalo and Trout

Director: Presley Paras

Writer: Presley Paras

Stars: Stephen A. ChangCarlye TamarenBrooke Coleman

Two female addicts, Buffalo and Trout, are hired to rob a white supremacists house. Once arriving to the house they are faced with a decision; either take the money and call it a job well done, or stay and rescue the young kidnapped couple being tortured by a group of white supremacists.

Lifelong friends Pig Buffalo Trout (Carlye Tamaren) and Stone Buffalo (Brooke Coleman) share copious amounts of drugs and a penchant for robbing the weirdos who supply them. The short begins with Buffalo’s voiceover explaining that their vices consist of “angel dust and a hint of justice” as they arrive at a job that will ultimately get them “in a pickle.” They are sent to the safe house of a white supremacist to rough him up and rob him by their “criminal talent agent” Swan Sawyer (Stephen A. Chang). However, the owner of the house arrives mid-heist with three other burly men and a young African American woman who has been kidnapped by them. The girls have a choice to make: take the drugs and money and get the hell out or play the heroes and save the girl. They choose the latter and use a large amount of drugs to fuel them into an adrenaline-filled blaze of glory.

When they get high and fuck shit up, they are Greek warriors with grape-leaf headdresses and shields like they pretended when they were little. Whereas so many drug-fueled films fail with the “here’s what we see when we are high” scenario, this film paints a beautiful neon dream world somewhat grounded in reality that portrays the actual events accurately, just more vividly.

As with many short films, this one leaves the viewer begging for more. The loveable characters with their beautiful little messed up world and friendship deserve to be explored in more depth. Buffalo and Trout began playing at film festivals a few months ago with a debut at Nightmares Film Fest and is slated to play several other festivals in 2020. If the film can gain enough traction, director Presley Paras intends on giving the duo either a feature film or a series. This little gem is a must-watch for sure.
