Horror Video Games That NEED to Become Movies [Part 3]
There are a lot of great horror games out there and honestly just games that would be cool movies, so my mind nagged me to write another edition of this. So let's just dive right in and check out ten more horror video games that need to be made into movies.
Days Gone
A dystopian future where mutated humans, known as Freakers dominate the land and attack the uninfected, while rival human factions also battle it out for dwindling resources. I've heard a lot of mixed things about this game but honestly it's one of my favorites of 2019. I played the hell out of this and just couldn't get enough. The story is pretty incredible and the open world setting is rife for possibility on the big screen. As lengthy as it is it would likely work best as two or maybe even three movies, but I think it would be fantastic. Sam Witwer would have to play the lead though, he embodied that character. And also, who wouldn't want to see those horde battles in a movie? They were some of the most intense moments in gaming I've ever experienced. So even though the game is new, I need to see a movie on this now.
Cold Fear
A member of the Coast Guard boards a Russian ship to discover the crew has been turned into zombie-like creatures by some sort of parasite and now the battle for survival begins. Okay, so this isn't exactly a beloved game but I think it has more merit than people give it credit for. There was some big innovation here with the Darkwave engine that allowed the boat to pitch and roll realistically, drastically changing up combat as the boat was always moving. That's pretty damn cool. Also, a horror movie set on a big ship with crazy zombies would be awesome. Truly nowhere to really run. Could seriously be badass and there are so few horror movies set on ships. Even less good ones.
The Darkness
A mob hitman is betrayed and left for dead, only to be imbued with demonic energy which gives him untold of powers along with two tentacles that shoot from his back and rip people to pieces. An underrated duology of games, The Darkness I and II were a hell of a lot of fun. Super violent with gun slinging, monster summoning and tentacle ripping action. And did I forget to mention all the heart eating? That's the best part. Plus, a mob movie with a horror theme would be awesome. Most of the ones in the past haven't quite worked out as well as I would have liked. And get Scorsese to direct it. Why not? He makes awesome mob movies and awesome horror movies. I think he would give it a wonderful old school aesthetic that would just sell it. Anything he touches is gold anyway.
Until Dawn
A group of friends gather at a mountaintop cabin following a previous visit in which two of them died, but they're not alone up there. I know what you're thinking, this game is already pretty much a movie, and you're right, that's true. But damn, don't you just want to watch it anyway? It's seriously that good. Have all the stars reprise their roles in the live action version maybe. Hell, maybe Fessenden could spice up the script to throw fans a few curveballs. I don't want to spoil anything for those who haven't played yet, but it's a dense story and there's a lot going on. All of it good. Plus we need more creative stories like this in the genre, so I would love to see it happen.
Amnesia – The Dark Descent
A man tries to maintain his sanity as he explores a castle and tries to avoid all manner of monster and supernatural fiend. Hell yes, I would love to see this. Single protagonist horror movies are so rare and since everything worked out well as a game, I have to imagine it could be translated to the big screen. Also, I think it would be best if shot in a POV style. Not found footage, genuine POV, right from the main character's eyes. I think that would offer up the opportunity for some cool angles and peripheral horror that could really sell the movie. Plus, it would be so immersive and honestly just really scare the crap out of people. Sounds like a good time to me.
Prototype
A shapeshifter must put a stop to a horrible virus ravaging Manhattan and turning people into horrific, bloodthirsty monsters. Oh god how I love these games. I spent so much time in these just causing mayhem. This one would honestly be a long shot to ever be seen on screen though. Not just because they're not the most revered games, because they do have their fanbase, but because it would be so expensive to do it right. The scale is massive and the complete chaos of the games would involve a ton of people and FX shots. Still, a man can dream and I would love to see a film series set in this world.
Layers of Fear
A disturbed painter (the best kind) tries to navigate his way through a Victorian mansion as he tries to complete his latest work along with solving the secrets of the house's dark past. This is such a narrative driven game and I think it could work really well as a movie. Imagine a surreal, haunting, atmospheric movie that never relies on jump scares but rather an absolutely seething tension. I can already see the visual style, so dark, so morbid, but so beautiful. The game is beloved and it seems most people who played it had a blast, so to see this tale on screen, if done right, would be bliss.
Siren
A group of psychics explore a series of Japanese villages while trying to avoid undead enemies in an effort to stay alive and solve the mystery. Okay, so there is an extremely loose film adaptation of this already but I want a true one because that would be awesome. The whole sightjacking angle is pretty unique and could be awesome on film. Also, the lack of fighting and more hide and seek tactics of the game could add some real tension on film. Honestly though, I don't want America to touch this and it should be a Japanese movie because the game just resonates with that culture's style. But this would be a fun and no doubt creepy one to watch.
The Forest
A plane crashes and the survivor sets out to find his son in the forest only to have to tangle with cannibalistic tribes and strange nocturnal creatures that hunt for human flesh. So if you take away the survival elements of the game, at least mostly, and focus more on the horror and narrative sides, you would have one hell of a movie. Can you see it now? Deep in the caves and one of those leggy boys comes running out of the darkness. That would be cool as hell to see. And if you played the game, you know where things go and how everything progresses and that would be a great movie.
Deadly Premonition
An FBI agent investigates a murder in a small town that has similarities to other murders across the country, revealing a supernatural menace behind it all. Of course Deadly Premonition. This is often called the Twin Peaks of video games and for good reason. It's so off the wall and strange while simultaneously compelling. And the movie would have to keep the aesthetic of the game. The whole often goofy but sometimes really creepy mesh is so weird that it works and I would just want to watch this.
So of course there are even more and I will be back to resurface some obscurities, newer titles and more, because this is fun. I love horror movies, I love horror video games, and even though video game movies are often really bad, I think horror would be the best genre to really break that trend for good. I mean, Silent Hill, am I right?
